Landmark football decision

In a case which has already been described by sports journalists as being “more important than Bosman”, Jim Sturman QC acted for Wigan FC in their successful appeal to The Court of Arbitration for Sport against a FIFA DRC decision ordering the club to pay Hearts FC £625,000 after Andrew Webster exercised his right to terminate his contract under Article 17 of the FIFA statutes. On appeal the CAS substituted an order that Wigan pay £150,000, rejecting Hearts cross-appeal that had claimed in excess of £4,000,000.
