Tracy Ayling QC secures accquittal in Court of Appeal in historic sex abuse conviction. After a ‘Watson Direction’ (where the Judge tells a Jury that when deliberating they should ‘give and take’) the Jury convicted the 77 year old defendant of a 38 year old sex abuse allegation. It was only one count in a course of conduct indictment.
The Court of Appeal reaffirmed that a ‘Watson direction’ should only be given in exceptional circumsatances.
