Until May 1st 1997 a criminal practitioner. Since then the holder of the offices of Attorney General for England & Wales and Attorney General for N. Ireland. Retired from that post on 29th July 1999.

As Attorney General, Sir John Morris was HM Government's principal legal adviser on English law, and the application of international law and ECHR law here and in Strasbourg, and EU law here and in Luxembourg. His duties included the superintendence of the main prosecuting agencies in both jurisdictions, and also that of the Treasury Solicitor & his counterpart.

As of January 2005, Lord Morris is currently not practising.
