Members of chambers welcomed a delegation of Senior Chinese Judges from the Supreme People’s Court as part of their project on the ‘Open Trial’. They explored the judicial system, in particular the open trial system in the UK. They wished to learn more about how the system operates in the UK and how the judges and lawyers practise in trials which are open to the public and the media. They also wished to understand the current debate about public trials among UK academics and conduct a comparative study with the system in China. Through this tour, the Chinese delegation hopes to capture the essence of the UK’s system of publicly accessible trials so as to make use of this learning experience to further strengthen the open trial system in China.
