Profile

James joined chambers upon completion of his pupillage.

He appears for the prosecution and defence in criminal work throughout London and the South East. He is on the Attorney General’s unified list of prosecutors.

Recent defence experience includes supply of drugs, serious violence and sexual offences. As a led junior, James has defended in murders and in serious fraud cases.

James has accepted instructions to prosecute extensively in relation to the importation of controlled drugs, violence and offences of dishonesty and fraud.

He also regularly undertakes confiscation, restraint and forfeiture work.

In addition to general criminal work, James has extensive knowledge and experience of defending in road traffic cases particularly in relation to technical issues. He undertook a secondment to the Financial Services Authority after joining chambers and accepts instructions and advises in relation to financial regulatory work and money laundering.

R v G Appeared for Defence
Junior acting alone for a former employee of Transport for London, accused of defrauding her employer of £50 000.

R v Jeffery Appeared for Defence
As a led junior, defended an insurance broker accused of 30 counts of defrauding commercial and private clients by failing to incept insurance policies on their behalf. Acquitted of all counts following trial.

Junior acting alone; prosecuted defendants said to have committed benefit fraud worth many thousands of pounds over many years.

Murder/Manslaughter
R v Lloyd Appeared for Defence
As led junior, defended the first defendant in a multi-handed allegation of murder. Concerned the murder of a man in the course of burglary of his home where the defendant accepted planning and arranging the burglary but not intending that violence should be used by those who carried out the burglary. Acquitted.

R v H Appeared for Prosecution (Junior Counsel )
As led junior, secured the conviction of H for the murder of a man on Southend seafront, whilst on bail awaiting sentence for an offence of GBH.

R v Oluwu Appeared for Defence
Junior acting alone, secured the acquittal of a defendant charged with supplying Class A drugs, arrested as part of an ongoing test purchase operation (operation SPOUT); the only defendant arrested as a result of that operation to be acquitted.

R v A & V Appeared for Prosecution
Junior acting alone prosecuting defendants in relation to substantial cocaine importation. Substantial issues arose in the course of the case in relation to mutual legal assistance from the French authorities, sought by the defence.

Confiscation and Restraint
R v Pettitt Appeared for Defence
Accepted instructions post-conviction for a defendant said to have been concerned in masterminding the importation of over 100kgs of cocaine into the UK. Conducted the final hearing at which the Crown sought a benefit figure in excess of £12million and hidden assets in excess of £1 million.

Operation Wastage Appeared for Prosecution (Junior Counsel )
As led junior, prosecuting multi handed allegation of conspiracy to evade excise duty on cigarettes, imported through the Parcelforce delivery system.
