Profile
Dr David Thomas has specialised in the study of the law and practice of sentencing for over thirty years. He was appointed Queen's Counsel (honoris causa) in 1996. He is the editor of Current Sentencing Practice, the Criminal Appeal Reports (Sentencing), sentencing cases editor of the Criminal Law Review, Sentencing Editor of Archbold, author of the Sentencing Referencer, and a regular contributor to other publications. He frequently lectures on behalf of the Judicial Studies Board and other organisations, including the Criminal Bar Association. Dr Thomas is available to accept instructions primarily on matters relating to sentencing, particularly in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division), or to advise. Recent cases in which he has appeared include R .v. Russell [1998] 2 Cr. App. R.(S.) 375 (return to custody), R. v. Divers [1999] 2 Cr. App. R.(S.) 217 (return to custody following committal for sentence), R. v. Newman, R. v. Buckland [2000] 2 Cr.App.R.(S.) 217(automatic life sentence), R. v. Szczerba [2002] 2 Cr.App.R.(S.) 387 (life imprisonment), R. v. McBean [2002] 1 Cr.App.R.(S.) 430 (detention during Her Majesty's Pleasure), R. v. Alden [2002] 2 Cr.App.R.(S) 326 (criminal damage), R. v. Palmer [2003] 1 Cr.App.R.(S.) 572 (confiscation), R. v. Benfield [2003] Crim.L.R. 811 (automatic life sentence), R. v. Van Hoogstraten (manslaughter).
