Maura McGowan QC, represented the main defendant in the trial of Arran Coghlan and others on charges of the murder of drug dealer, David Barnshaw, and conspiracies to supply Class A and Class B drugs.

The trial, following one of the lengthiest and complex investigations by the Greater Manchester Police and the National Crime Squad ever, was stayed, after 10 months, for abuse of process following findings of police misconduct and dishonesty.
