Barry George found not guilty

Barry George was found not guilty of the murder of Jill Dando by a jury at the Old Bailey on the 1st August 2008 following an 8 week trial. He was represented by William Clegg QC who first appeared for Barry George in the Court of Appeal when the original conviction was quashed because of doubts over forensic evidence. William Clegg QC was instructed by solicitors, Carter Moore. The case involved a consideration of one of the largest murder inquiries ever conducted by the Metropolitan Police.

7/7 Conspiracy Trial

Michael Wolkind QC led for the first defendant in the 7/7 Conspiracy Trial. The prosecution alleged that Waheed Ali planned the explosions in London, accompanying the suicide bombers on an hostile reconnaissance to the Capital. 52 persons died as a result of the attack. They also relied on his admitted trips to training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Jihadist material recovered from his possession. After a 4 month trial the jury were unable to agree and the case awaits a re-trial.

Joey Barton

Jim Sturman QC represented Joey Barton in relation to an allegation of assault on Ousmane Dabo, committed whilst both players were at Manchester City FC. Mr Barton was sentenced to a suspended sentence of imprisonment.

R v J, Guildford Crown Court, May - June 2008

Valerie Charbit leading James Harrison secured the acquittal of an insurance intermediary charged with 30 offences of dishonesty and using false instruments. The prosecution alleged that the defendant had taken money from clients over four years with no intention of incepting insurance and that he had forged documentation to conceal the fraud.


Confiscation Proceedings

Tim Kendal (together with a junior) represented the defendant Kevin Sykes - alleged by the SFO to be the mastermind of the Cheney Pension Fraud, in which over £2.8 million was stolen from the pension fund. The SFO alleged that the defendant had received a benefit of £3.4 million and contended that he had hidden assets. The judge, accepting defence submissions, did not make a finding that Sykes had hidden assests and made instead a confiscation order limited to £90,000.
