Jim Sturman QC, instructed by Matthew Bennett of Brabners Chaffe Street, acted for Wigan FC before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne in a case that will decide what level of compensation should be awarded where a professional footballer terminates his contract "outside the protected period" (Article 17 of the FIFA regulations). The case arises out of the departure of Andrew Webster from Hearts after 3 years of a 4 year contract in the summer of 2006. Commentators have described the case as the most important in football since the Bosman case. Judgement has been reserved.
